Change of Perspective
On the first day of teaching Heritage Keepers® Abstinence Education at a high school in the rural Lowcountry of SC, a group of 10th grade girls filed into the classroom. The Heritage educator noticed one young lady that had a “don’t care” attitude enter the room. For the majority of the week, the young lady seemed to believe that she had “heard it all” and did not see abstinence as an attainable goal.
By the end of the week, the young lady began to identify with the emotional pain that comes with participating in sexual activity outside of marriage as well as the importance of a healthy marriage. She believed that it was a valid reason to choose abstinence or recommit to abstinence. She shared with the Heritage educator how she had a difficult home life growing up and does not want to follow in the same path as her mother. Lastly, she thanked the educator for being honest about the effects of sexual activity outside of marriage and the benefits of abstinence. The educator was pleased to know that this young lady felt confident in recommitting to abstinence.
