Too Late... Censored Abstinence Education Study Finally Released

A 2009 study funded by HHS that revealed positive parental and teen support for Abstinence Education was finally released after public protests and overwhelming numbers of Freedom of Information requests.

The study entitled “National Survey of Adolescents and Their Parents: Attitudes and Opinions about Sex and Abstinence” was prepared by Cambridge, Mass.-based Abt Associates for the Family and Youth Services Bureau, the Administration for Children and Families, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The study clearly did not support Congress and the current administration’s decisions to cancel early, all grants going to abstinence-centered programs in their FY2010 budget.  While the majority of parents and teens surveyed for the study wanted abstinence-centered education provided, 176 programs will end this month. See the complete list of cancelled programs nationwide.

In South Carolina, abstinence-centered education grantees that saw their funding cut mid-stream were Life Support, Clarendon County School District 2, Heritage Community Services and Palmetto Family Council’s B-True Project.

It is important to note that this decision to cut funding was not due to the economy, but rather ideology, since programs supported by the Planned Parenthood/SIECUS networks received a tremendous boost in funding for their condoms-only teen sex programs.

The South Carolina Healthy Family Formation Coalition (SC HFF Coalition) is organized and staffed by Heritage Community Services. The SC HFF Coalition promotes child and family well-being by providing opportunities for statewide communication about such issues as: adolescent pregnancy, unwed childbearing, fatherlessness, sexual exploitation of our youth, dating violence and domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, gang activity and youth violence.

Coalition members support healthy family formation initiatives that integrate character-based life skills, teen pregnancy prevention with an emphasis on abstinence-centered education, and the importance of fidelity-within-marriage.

Together we can impact our culture so that forming healthy families becomes a norm, rather than the exception, for South Carolina.

Please, forward this E-News to interested friends, family and colleagues and ask them to consider joining the Coalition.
