SC Healthy Family Formation Coalition E-News!

Parent Win Again and Again

Positive letters and Op Eds are running in favor of an optional abstinence-from-sexual-activity message for all middle and high school students.  Last month, the Charleston County School Board voted (6:3) to keep Heritage Keepers® in the schools.

Parents now have a Real Choice regarding sexual health instruction for their child.  Parents can choose Heritage Keepers®, or Heritage Keepers® plus a ‘Safe Sex’ program. Either way, parents win because they are in charge!

Heritage Keepers®, the only authentic abstinence life skills program approved for the school district, measures success based on a decrease in the initiation of sexual activity or an increase in returning to abstinence.

The majority of ‘Safe Sex’ programs do not measure abstinence.  One can hardly expect ‘Safe Sex’ programs to emphasize abstinence if that is not their main goal.

More than a dozen so-called ‘Safe Sex’ programs have been  approved and are mandatory unless a parent opts their child out. Parents must still ask for and sign consent forms for their child to receive Heritage Keepers®.

OP EDs and Letters

Abstinence Works by Al Schirduan, SCHFF member and Vice-Chair of the Health Advisory Committee

Teen pregnancy rates drop due to abstinence program by Jerry Raymond, Chief Program Officer for Heritage Keepers®.

Abstinence-only preserved in Charleston schools is written by Greg Hambrick of the Charleston City Paper.  This Op Ed is a bit edgy, not accurate on some important facts, but refreshingly supportive of parents having a choice.

The South Carolina Healthy Family Formation Coalition (SC HFF Coalition) is organized and staffed by Heritage Community Services. The SC HFF Coalition promotes child and family well-being by providing opportunities for statewide communication about such issues as: adolescent pregnancy, unwed childbearing, fatherlessness, sexual exploitation of our youth, dating violence and domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, gang activity and youth violence.

Coalition members support healthy family formation initiatives that integrate character-based life skills, teen pregnancy prevention with an emphasis on abstinence-centered education, and the importance of fidelity-within-marriage.

Together we can impact our culture so that forming healthy families becomes a norm, rather than the exception, for South Carolina.

Please, forward this E-News to interested friends, family and colleagues and ask them to consider joining the Coalition.
