CHARLESTON COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD SIDES WITH PARENTS

Heritage Keepers® program reaffirmed by School Board

CHARLESTON, SCAffirming a successful program that has provided educational services to Charleston children for more than a decade, the Charleston County School Board (CCSD) this week voted to continue using (6-3) Heritage Community Services as a health education service provider for Charleston County schools.

SC HFF Coalition members attended the meeting, spoke boldly, sent e-mails and signed a petition supporting Heritage Keepers®.

Maisha G. Rounds, Charleston County’s 2010 Teacher of the Year, addressed the Board and stated that,

"Abstinence may not be popular, but it works.

Thanks to Heritage, my husband and I were

well equipped to abstain until marriage.

I'm proud to say that we both kept our pledges."

Over strong opposition from special interest groups, the CCSD decided overwhelmingly to keep the program as an option for Charleston principals and parents. All students deserve to receive a compelling message about the benefits of delaying sex until marriage.

It is clear that the Heritage Keepers® program was the only option left to the Board that could provide any balance to the already approved Safe Sex programs in place from the Planned Parenthood, SIECUS and ACLU child sex advocates.  Minutes from the meeting state,

“Superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley

will direct staff not to exclude

Heritage Community Services

from the list of parental choices

for reproductive health.”

Pregnancy rates among 15-17 year old children have dropped 37% over the past thirteen years while Heritage has been providing services to County schools.  This is the primary age group taught by Heritage Keepers® educators.

When sexual activity takes place in the context of marriage, the outcomes are tremendously beneficial for parents and children. Heritage Keepers® pursues those positive outcomes with South Carolina’s children, including greater academic success, and lower rates of poverty, crime, incarceration, child abuse and domestic violence.

The South Carolina Healthy Family Formation Coalition (SC HFF Coalition) is organized and staffed by Heritage Community Services. The SC HFF Coalition promotes child and family well-being by providing opportunities for statewide communication about such issues as: adolescent pregnancy, unwed childbearing, fatherlessness, sexual exploitation of our youth, dating violence and domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, gang activity and youth violence.

Coalition members support healthy family formation initiatives that integrate character-based life skills, teen pregnancy prevention with an emphasis on abstinence-centered education, and the importance of fidelity-within-marriage.

Together we can impact our culture so that forming healthy families becomes a norm, rather than the exception, for South Carolina.

Please, forward this E-News to interested friends, family and colleagues and ask them to consider joining the Coalition.
