Why Be True

The BTrue Youth Leadership project of Palmetto Family Council PFC kicked off their outreach to parents and community leaders in April and May with luncheons in three regions of the state:  Upstate, Midlands, and Lowcountry.

Each luncheon featured presentations by BTrue leaders in their region along with PFC President, Oran Smith, and BTrue web designer and webmaster, Dave Wilson.  Tammy Bryant, Technical Assistant for Heritage Community Services, provided insights into the basis for the Heritage Keepers® curriculum that is used to train BTrue youth leaders.

The BTrue luncheons were hosted to assist in forming seven groups of ten high school students in each region.   Groups have been organized in all three regions, but the Regional Directors are eager to bring together more.

The BTrue abstinence project is the only one of its kind in the United States that utilizes online social networking to spread the abstinence message.  Student groups take creatively produced videos, songs, poems, etc. to convey the abstinence message and then upload them to the BTrue website.  Online friends are invited to vote for the most creative production that conveys the best message for the various topics.

Although the BTrue website is still in its initial stages, a number of student projects have been featured: essays, blogs on a trip to Washington, DC, testimonials from students and parents.

Visit the website and join so that you can view videos and other BTrue projects.  There is a special section for parents who want to keep up with the exciting activities of the youth as well as learn more ways to relate to their teens.

Be on the cutting edge of what is happening in abstinence education; check out BTrue.  For more information, contact Carole Walters at carole@palmettofamily.org.

Parents Speak Up National Campaign (PSUNC)

PSUNC has all new events over the next couple of months being hosted around the country. Come out to one of these free workshops and explore how to talk with youth about sex.

Workshops are available for parents and for community leaders. The schedule of these upcoming events is posted at the Virtual Outreach Center.  Check the schedule for times and locations.

The South Carolina Healthy Family Formation Coalition (SC HFF Coalition) is organized and staffed by Heritage Community Services. The SC HFF Coalition promotes child and family well-being by providing opportunities for statewide communication about such issues as: adolescent pregnancy, unwed childbearing, fatherlessness, sexual exploitation of our youth, dating violence and domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, gang activity and youth violence.

Coalition members support healthy family formation initiatives that integrate character-based life skills, teen pregnancy prevention with an emphasis on abstinence-centered education, and the importance of fidelity-within-marriage.

Together we can impact our culture so that forming healthy families becomes a norm, rather than the exception, for South Carolina.

Please, forward this E-News to interested friends, family and colleagues and ask them to consider joining the Coalition.
